Shamanism By Barbara C. Champlin Shamanism is a spiritual healing modality Archaeologists and Linguists have been able to date back over 40,000 years. And to date is still practiced in many countries. Depending on the country, nation or tribe it may have a different name. The practices within shamanism may also differ sometimes in protocol if youwill. Here in North America the names shaman and shamanism have become somewhat generic terms. Some associate the shaman with the Native Americans or Voodoo. Tibetan shamanism is from the Bon era. Which was before the first Buddha, Shakyamuni. The shamans' roll in the community can be vast and complex, from spiritualist to herbalist to counselor to advisor and yes, warrior. With all Shamanisms' cultural differences sometimes even between tribes, there are similarities or sameness connections. Everything has soul/spirit is a common belief. Sometimes the soul/spirit has dis-ease, is hurt, or a part may leave us so that we may survive a trauma, no matter how big or small. Or perhaps there is possession. Which is not always of demonic means. The shaman or shaman practitioner will alter their state of consciousness by using drumming, rattling, chanting or dancing to name a few. In a number of cultural tribes, the healing is community participation, helping the shaman to do the work of the spirits, no one taking credit, not even the shaman, especially the shaman. This altered state of consciousness is not self-hypnosis or astral travel. Neither of the later are altered states of consciousness. Though shamans' and some shaman practitioners do have the ability to throw or send ones light, channel, shape-shift (usually into animals), or dream-walk, to name a few of the spiritually magical gifts. While in the altered state of consciousness the shaman or shaman practitioner travels to spirit worlds, usually the lower world or the upper world, though there is also work done in the middle world, this world. The lower world shouldn't be thought of as just hell like and demonic. Nor should the upper world be thought of as just light and goodness. In these spirit worlds the shaman or shaman practitioner communicates with their spirit animals, teachers and guides, and acts as the conduit for the work of the spirits. The more common practices of the spiritual healing modality shamanism, particularly here in North America are; Power Animal Retrieval, re-empowering; Soul Retrieval, returning soul parts; Extraction, the removal of spiritual intrusion; Psycho-Pomp, actually less common, a Greek word for "conductor of souls", helping the souls of the dead. Shamanism is a very old, strong and powerful spiritual healing modality. And its' healing can sometimes be subtle but profound.

of the article. Soul Retrieval By Barbara C. Champlin The word soul over the years has taken on many meanings. I use the word soul as describing our life force or vital essence. Many of us don't feel completely whole. We may feel "spacey". Phrases such as, "I don't feel like I'm all here", "I fee like a part of me is missing" or"I feel like a part of me is till with him/her" are common phrases when there is soul loss. We search for the completeness, to be full to ourselves and to the people that are close to us. Wanting to get back the intimacy and intensity of life. >From the shamanic perspective soul loss is one of the major causes of illness. Whenever we experience trauma a part of our soul or life force separates from us. This can be emotional or physical loss. The trauma can be accidents, physical upset, addiction, post traumatic stress, war time, divorce, death of a loved one, coma, immune deficiencies, illness, surgery, abuse, incest, rape, or abortion. Soul or vital essence can also be frightened away or sometimes stolen. This separation is a defense and actually a good survival method so that we may survive the experience. It is important to remember that soul loss can be caused by whatever a person experiences as traumatic. Usually the soul needs to be brought back. The soul retrieval should be done as soon as possible, even if years have passed. The shamanic practitioner in an altered state of consciousness travels to the spirit worlds to locate the missing soul piece or pieces and returns them to the client. The soul piece that the shamanic practitioner locates can be past, present or future. Sometimes an animal spirit is returned. It is the pure essence that is brought back. After the life force or vital essence has been returned the client can start to experience acclimation or shifts or changes in themselves or their life up to two weeks after having the soul retrieval. The shifts or changes can be subtle or blatant. Considering all that we walk through in this lifetime it is rare that one would only have soul retrieval done once. Three questions I ask my clients are: Why do you think you need soul retrieval? What is not working in your life now? Do you want change? One client, a young woman, stated that she had difficulty working in her creative process since college. Her art was something she voiced with strong passion and love. She did not make her living as an artist though. Journeying to the spirit world a vital essence was returned. After the soul retrieval the client said that she had wanted to major in art in college, but the choice caused turmoil in the family putting her in a position to choose something else. There was correlation with her story and the vital essence that had been returned. Not long after the soul retrieval the client sold a couple of her art pieces and expressed that things were flowing much easier and she felt the passion she once had felt for her art again. That regained passion for her art helped her regain passion in other facets of her life. Change is something that can happen when doing soul retrieval work. If one does not want this kind of change perhaps other shamanic work such as: Power Animal Retrieval, re-empowering oneself or Extraction work, removing spiritual intrusion may be a good place to start.
